Reaper King, Sovereign of Scarecrows
Reaper King is more than a mere commander—it’s the embodiment of calculated destruction and unyielding resilience. This deck thrives on scarecrow synergies, artifact value, and clever strategies that transform every move into a devastating blow against your opponents. At its core, the King’s ability to destroy permanents when a scarecrow enters the battlefield sets the tone for a game filled with dreadful annihilation.
Let’s delve into the intricate workings of this court of scarecrows, changelings, and artifacts, where every piece is vital, every move deliberate, and every result catastrophic for your opponents.
The Colorful Kingdom of Scarecrows
The Reaper King’s all-color identity breathes life into the scarecrows whose effects rely on specific colors. Antler Skulkin is a shining example of this synergy, giving the King and other white creatures persist, ensuring their return after destruction. This resilience makes board wipes a temporary inconvenience rather than a devastating setback.
Other scarecrows, like Fang Skulkin, Jawbone Skulkin, and Hoof Skulkin, bring their own unique contributions. Fang Skulkin grants wither to black creatures, turning Reaper King and your other black-aligned allies into lethal threats. Jawbone Skulkin grants red creatures haste, amplifying your aggressive edge.
These effects combine beautifully with Cunning Evasion, which allows you to return scarecrows to your hand after they’ve attacked and were blocked. Pair this with cost reducers like Etherium Sculptor and Foundry Inspector, and you’ll find yourself recasting scarecrows for minimal or no mana, repeatedly triggering Reaper King’s ability to obliterate permanents and removing -1/-1 counters from your persisting scarecrows.
Endless Straw Reserves
Your army of scarecrows is bolstered by a near-endless supply of changelings and token producers. Birthing Boughs and Formless Genesis create changeling tokens, which count as scarecrows to activate Reaper King’s destructive power. These cards ensure that even if your board is wiped or your scarecrows destroyed, you’ll have reinforcements waiting in the wings.
When scarecrows do fall, Wake the Past, Scarecrone and Trading Post become invaluable tools. Wake the Past revives all artifacts, bringing back your scarecrows en masse to wreak havoc once more. Meanwhile, Trading Post serves as a versatile utility card, allowing you to bring back fallen artifacts, create blockers, or even draw cards. Scarecrone deserves special mention as a linchpin of your army’s resilience. This artifact creature allows you to sacrifice a scarecrow for a card draw, fueling your strategy with more resources. Better still, for just a touch of mana, Scarecrone can return any fallen scarecrow from the graveyard straight to the battlefield, triggering Reaper King’s ability and turning death into yet another tool of destruction. With this loyal crone in your ranks, your scarecrow army will never rest, and neither will your enemies.
Blink Tactics and Wholesale Discounts
Your scarecrows don’t just destroy; they also come cheap. Etherium Sculptor and Foundry Inspector reduce the cost of your artifact spells, allowing you to chain multiple scarecrow casts in a single turn. Some cards, like Field Creeper, Fang Skulkin and Jousting Dummy even become completely free to cast. This synergy pairs exceptionally well with blink spells like Ghostly Flicker and Semester's End, allowing you to exile and return your creatures to the battlefield, dodging removal and retriggering the King’s ability.
A well-timed blink can protect your board from devastation while punishing opponents with more destruction. Nahiri's Resolve takes this strategy to another level, exiling all your creatures at the end of each turn and returning them stronger, untapped, and hasty—ready to deal lethal damage and wreak further havoc.
Ramping into Royalty
To summon Reaper King’s power, this deck ensures smooth and reliable mana generation. Wild-Field Scarecrow, Scaretiller, Oasis Gardener and Three Tree Mascot not only fix your mana but also double as scarecrows to maintain synergy. Coalition Relic, Firemind Vessel, and Arcane Signet are vital ramp pieces, ensuring that Reaper King arrives on the battlefield quickly and with authority.
TatterdeMillion
The scarecrows and changelings are supported by an army of artifact synergies. Mirrorworks creates additional copies of your scarecrows as they enter the battlefield, doubling the triggers from Reaper King. Saheeli's Artistry allows you to copy both creatures and artifacts even if you don't control them. Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice doubles down on artifact activations and triggers, ensuring you can maximize your destructive and duplicative effects.
Meanwhile, Mimic Vat turns fallen scarecrows into repeatable threats, creating token copies each turn to keep the pressure on your opponents. March of Progress can duplicate all your artifact creatures, multiplying your army and making every turn a nightmare for your enemies.
The King’s Weight in Gold
The King’s steep mana value of 10 can become problematic really quickly, but with the right cards, it becomes one of your greatest assets. Traverse Eternity and One with the Machine turn Reaper King into a conduit for enormous card advantage, drawing you 10 cards in one stroke. These spells ensure you always have the resources to maintain control and keep your foes under your thumb.
Beyond these, utility creatures like Artificer's Assistant and spells like Thirst for Knowledge keep your hand replenished and your plans in motion.
Rendmaw, the Screeching Prince
Every kingdom needs its enforcer, and Rendmaw, Creaking Nest is the Screeching Prince who carries out the Reaper King’s will. With menace and reach, this legendary scarecrow is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, both as a blocker and an aggressive attacker. However, Rendmaw’s true power lies in its disruptive and chaotic nature. When it enters the battlefield—or whenever you play a card with two or more types such as artifact creatures— Its unique ability summons a murder of black Bird tokens, each one cursed to attack relentlessly. These birds are goaded, ensuring they’ll sow discord among your foes, turning their own strategies against them while leaving you unscathed.
But Rendmaw doesn’t stop there. Its effectiveness multiplies with blinking effects. Rendmaw loves cards like Nahiri's Resolve or Ghostly Flicker resetting him and triggering its ability again to unleash yet another flurry of chaos, ensuring that the battlefield is perpetually swarming with Birds, each one shrieking their allegiance to the Prince of Scarecrows.
Reaping the Rewards
Reaper King leads with an iron fist and a devastatingly clever strategy, combining scarecrow typal synergies with powerful artifact and color-based abilities. Whether you’re overwhelming opponents with endless destruction, blinking your board for value, or rebuilding from scratch with recursion, the King ensures your dominance is absolute. Step into the court of scarecrows, and be ready for harvest—one permanent at a time.
